Each year in May, communities across our country recognize law enforcement officers for their dedication, courage, and sacrifice. National Police Week was established in 1962 by a presidential proclamation from President John F. Kennedy. It includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, along with a week of observances honoring and recognizing officers who have given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve and protect our communities.
Locally in Cleveland, police officers are recognized in a variety of meaningful ways. Numerous organizations here celebrate their commitment to public safety and community service. The Cleveland Police Foundation (CPF) assists in many of these efforts, supporting recognition events and initiatives in the month of May, and throughout the year.
One notable event is the national Unity Tour, which brings together hundreds of officers from across the country to honor fallen colleagues. Team Greater Cleveland participates by cycling to Washington, D.C., where they join others at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. CPF has assisted the Greater Cleveland Team’s efforts through financial contributions and equipment.
Additional local activities take place during Police Week, from May 9 through May 16, including memorial services, a parade, social gatherings, vigils, and other commemorations and events.
The Cleveland Police Foundation honors law enforcement officers and assists in a variety of ways to support the Cleveland Police during the month of May and throughout the year. If you would like to help the CPF’s mission to serve Cleveland Police, please consider a donation to CPF.
